What You Need to Know About Breastfeeding as a New Mom

As the breastfeeding awareness month of August comes to an end, we caught up with Nurse Mpinane Pearl Moloisane to answer all your questions about breastfeeding as a new mom. As a mom of two myself, I know that breastfeeding can bring up a lot of questions, from latching techniques and milk supply concerns to the emotional toll it takes on you. That is why I felt it was important for Nurse Moloisane to address all your questions on breastfeeding.

So, whether you are an expectant mother curious about what’s to come or a mom to a newborn already seeking some extra wisdom, I hope this article enlightens our journey.

1. Does breastfeeding feeding come naturally to every mom?

Breastfeeding does not necessarily come naturally to every mom. A lot of moms struggle with breastfeeding, especially during the first few days postpartum. Sometimes, mommies struggle with the proper breastfeeding technique, making it difficult for the baby to latch well on the breast. In addition, there are emotional problems, hormonal imbalances or health problems that can make it not easy for mommies to breastfeed.

2. How often should a newborn be breasted?

Breastfeeding on demand is advisable, which means feeding whenever the baby demands to be on the breast. This is also good because it promotes stimulation of the milk supply as the baby keeps suckling on the breast.

3. Is it normal to have a low milk supply, and are there ways to promote milk supply?

Yes, it is normal to have a low milk supply, especially when the mom is stressed or stays long without breastfeeding the baby. When a baby suckles on the breast, prolactin levels in the blood increase and stimulate milk production. Thus, if mommy does not allow baby enough time on the breast or does not breastfeed on demand, the milk supply is most likely to decrease.

Ways to promote milk supply include feeding the baby on demand, mommy eating a well-balanced diet, resting, and expressing milk by hand or breast pump to encourage stimulation.

4. What would you recommend to mothers who cannot produce enough breast milk?

– Adequate fluid intake and avoid caffeine and fizzy drinks.

– Breastfeeding often also stimulates more supply or using a breast pump to store milk.

– Enough rest and reduced stress.

– If mommy is really struggling, she must consult her healthcare practitioner or lactation consultant for further assessments.

5. Can a mom fall pregnant while breastfeeding?

Yes, you can fall pregnant while still breastfeeding, and the menstrual cycle is not back yet.

Breastfeeding should not be used as a form of contraceptives.

6. What tips can you give a new mom about breastfeeding?

– Breastfeeding does not come easily and naturally for every mom. Do not be too hard on yourself if you choose to formula feed instead.

– Choose one method either exclusive breastfeeding or exclusive formula feeding. Try not to mix feed (unless your healthcare practitioner recommends it).

– Moms must know that while breastfeeding offers many benefits, individual circumstances can vary. Some moms may face challenges with breastfeeding, and in such cases, it is best to seek guidance and support from their healthcare practitioner or lactation consultants to ensure both their well-being and the baby’s.
