We’re deep in the winter season, at least in the southern hemisphere, and if you have a newborn, ensuring that they stay warm and comfortable can be tricky. Generally, newborns cannot adjust to temperature changes as well as adults. Thus, ensuring their comfort and warmth while making sure that they don’t overheat is vital. In this blog post, I share 6 tips for layering newborn clothing indoors during winter to keep them warm and cosy.
1 Start with a soft, breathable base layer
This layer sets the foundation for your baby’s comfort. Choose a footed legging and long-sleeved vest made of soft, breathable fabric, e.g., cotton. At this point, you want to provide enough insulation without overwhelming your newborn.
2 Layer up with a cosy garment
On top of that, choose a garment that provides insulation without being bulky. Opt for a soft long-sleeve onesie or baby grow.
3 Prioritise easy access to diaper changes
Layering doesn’t mean sacrificing convenience. Look for baby grows or vests with snap closures that make diaper changes a breeze. This way, you can easily remove and replace layers as needed without disturbing your baby too much. The double zip-up babygrows are a favourite of mine as you can change a diaper without having your newborn completely naked.
4 Don’t forget the head, hands, and feet
Keep your baby’s head warm with soft, breathable hats that cover their ears. Mittens or gloves will help protect their hands, and socks will keep their tiny feet warm. Look for options that are easy to put on and won’t slip off easily.
5 Swaddles and blankets for added warmth
For indoor comfort, consider using lightweight, breathable blankets or swaddles. These versatile items can be used during naptime or while snuggling with your baby. Remember to tuck the blankets securely around your baby, avoiding their face and ensuring a safe sleep environment.
6 Watch out for signs of discomfort
Your baby’s comfort should guide your layering choices. Observe their cues for signs of discomfort or overheating, such as sweating. Adjust the layers accordingly to ensure they stay cosy without being too hot or cold.
It may not be necessary to go overboard in dressing your newborn indoors. The one-more-layer rule of thumbs can be a helpful guide to gauge how far to go in dressing your newborn in winter. The rule basically says that your newborn should wear one additional layer than you. So, if you’re comfortable in two layers, your baby should wear three. Remember, while it is important to keep your newborn warm, it is just as important that they do not overheat, especially when sleeping.
